Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
  • DISTILLERY – Brown-Forman Shively Distillery
  • REGION – Louisville, KY
  • AGE – NAS (From the tasting, it appears to be around 8-10 years)
  • STRENGTH – 57.5% (115 Proof)
  • MASH BILL –
  • MSRP – $55-60
  • OTHER – This review was carried out after the neck pour and letting the bottle breathe. After pouring neat in an Acopa Belgian glass, I let it rest for 10 mins.

GLANCE

It has a nice deep mahogany color to it and tall legs to it.

NOSE

After letting it open up, I got deep notes of vanilla, rich brown sugar, leather and jam with notes of banana. The high proof doesn’t interfering with nosing and gives great dessert notes

Drop of H2O – I got more banana and fruity notes.

TASTE

The palate was a pure joy. I got stoned fruit, baking spices like cinnamon, vanilla, and banana cream pie towards the end of the palate. From the older bourbon you get fair amount of char and oakiness. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy/oily.

Drop of H2O – I got more spiciness towards the front of the palate with all other flavors mentioned above following suit.

FINISH

Its a long lingering finish with spiciness and dark chocolate. Nothing too complex but gives you a nice Kentucky hug.

CLOSING REMARKS

I have never tasted Old Forester Birthday bourbon, but I would imagine this is what it kind of tastes like. Also, I must say if you want to introduce this to someone who is not big on going close to the triple digit proofs, after tasting this they will pleasantly surprised. The most prominent word that kept popping in my mind was dessert. I mean wow, this tasted like much older bourbon which was finished in a toasted barrel with less char on the taste and nose. Its not overly complex but there is enough here to keep you occupied. On the other hand it can be a great daily sipper enjoyed with company. The prominent notes of stoned fruit, banana foster, vanilla ice-cream and dark chocolate was a delight. When considering the price of $55 (in most areas), readily available all through US, and a triple digit proofer this is a terrific buy. A must add to your collection!
