GLANCE

Bright golden color with clear clarity. Light to medium intensity in color with medium viscosity.

NOSE

The spice notes from the rye comes at you right away with raw oak. Had a nose of a younger rye. The intensity is medium to pronounced. As it opens up you get notes of a full bouquet of flowers with sugar cane syrup, molasses, pears and strong apricot.

PALATE

Medium sweetness. Mouthfilling with simple syrup texture. I got notes of sweet oak, clove with bright citrus fruits. Here I got pears, apricots, mint and clove with the sweet oak + dusting of nuts rounding out the palate.

FINISH

Medium with some complexity. I got notes of mint, shredded coconut, peaches and rye spice

CLOSING REMARKS

I must say when I first heard about this whiskey that Barrel craft was releasing, I was skeptical. I am one to always lean towards trying unique, interesting, strange flavors in hopes of finding something exciting and new! But this product from Barrel craft, had me second guessing. Could they really deliver a well balanced product with this many finishes? Much to my pleasure, I had nothing to worry about! Seagrass contains a blend of ryes from Indiana, Tennessee, and Canada finished in various casks. The blend of ryes were broken down in batches and aged separately in the various casks. When the batches were ready to be bottled they were expertly blended together to create the final Seagrass!

Statement from Barrel Craft Spirits

Launched earlier this year, Barrell Seagrass is a blend of American and Canadian rye whiskeys, meticulously sourced and finished separately in Martinique Rhum Agricole casks, apricot brandy casks, and Madeira barrels. The expression highlights the grassy oceanside notes in rye and the opulence and spice of finishing barrels.

Barrel Craft is not new to taking big risk and trying bold blends but this appeared to be their boldest bet yet. Aged in new charred oak and ex-bourbon barrels and then finished in 3 separate distinct barrels, and then delivered a well balanced product is no easy task. As I nosed and tasted it, I was amazed. I could pick up on the flavors imparted from each barrel clearly. Only on the nose you could make a case that at times, apricots came on strongly. But as it opened up, the whiskey opened up like a beautiful bouquet! This is precision blending where the craft of blending shines and the age doesn’t matter. The rye spice perfectly complemented the light fruits and then the dark fruits plus rich baking spices.

VALUE

For a non-age stated American/Canadian rye whiskey the price tag is hefty. But it’s readily available and is unique in the sense that it is a rye whiskey blend with apricot brand finish among others. To my knowledge I don’t know of another rye with a similar finish or palate. If you are someone who wants to explore unique flavors that whiskey can provide and are not afraid of taking risk, Seagrass is for you! Cheers!
