GLANCE

Medium to high intensity. Deep rich wood/rust color

NOSE

Initially the ethanol is strong and needs significant time to open up. You get sweet grain, caramel, vanillas and some spices come through. Along with this there are an assortment of stewed fruits with jammy aromas.

PALATE

Medium sweetness overall and mouth-filling. Oily texture. Pronounced flavor intensity. I got nutmeg and peanut butter throughout. Then the strawberry jam enters with hint of citrus and cherry flavors (cherry cola). Caramel and vanilla with brown sugar follow to round out the palate.

FINISH

Long with some complexity. Peanut butter, oiliness, cherries, and cinnamon spice

CLOSING REMARKS

For some time compared to Elijah Craig Barrel Proof series, the Larceny Barrel Proof series lagged behind by a fare bit in my opinion. Mostly they weren’t able to deliver a cohesive experience. LBP (Larceny Barrel Proof) has come a long way. In last years B521, it was mostly oak + peanut butter dominant with trailing fruits and honey. This years B522 not only showcases the oak, the peanut butter, some nuts but interplay’s it nicely with spiciness. At times the spiciness is sweet, like cinnamon syrup. Along with this the red fruit, jammy flavors are able to shine just as bright. This creates in my opinion a powerful bourbon. I dock points for the ethanol burn on the nose and needing to get significant air to enjoy the dram. The finish is the weak-point for this batch (its inconsistent at times), as it doesn’t 100% leave me with wanting to continue sipping throughout the night. This is because the spiciness clashes with the sweetness from the peanut butter and the cherry cola gets caught in the middle. Overall a very nice pour, and worth having it on your bar. Cheers!
