GLANCE
Significantly lighter in color than there other offerings. Medium intensity and dark gold hue
NOSE
Freshly mowed wet grass, lemon meringue pie, there is that hint of savory bbq note that I get on CS Frey ranch bourbon. Clean with pronounced intensity. Fresh gala apples and apricots. Light stoned fruits. Vegetal aromas here – reminding me of the forest floor. Some sweet aromas of pretzel cooking

PALATE
Here the malt influence comes through. I get cooked dark chocolate, notes of cotton candy, white pepper and oak with vegetal notes. Some vanilla come through as well. Medium sweetness overall, with mouth filling texture. It’s silky but at times creamy as well (more towards the back end of the palate).

FINISH
Short with some complexity. Dry oak with vanilla milk protein shake like note, and some rye spice
CLOSING REMARKS
Having the ability to malt your grains on site, is a game changer. Frey Ranch was started in 2006 by Colby & Ashley Frey. Since then Frey Ranch has launched products that have elevated the realization of what the bourbon flavor profile can be. Their products have quite the distinct expression that really gets me excited about whats more to come from them. Hence now we have for a limited time a few new expressions. These expressions surround the malting of the grains grown on the farm to discover new flavors. The grains grown on the farm are corn, wheat, rye and barley. Colby has taken great interest in the malting process and has a custom made steep tank and germination/kilning drum for this process.
As someone who enjoys and embracing new flavors, flavor profiles and techniques that help us get there in a natural way I love this product for that. If I am being frank, this is not a daily drinker. This is a thinker and its a whiskey to get geeked out over with your whiskey loving friend. The nose and palate were enticing and kept me wanting to come back for more. The finish left me desiring more. Love the innovation here at Frey Ranch and look forward to more. Cheers!
Press Release – From Colby Frey
“Malt is a crucial ingredient in most whiskeys, though traditionally it’s only 10-15 percent of the mash bill,” said Whiskey Farmer Colby Frey. “We wanted to find out what would happen if we malted all the grains for these new releases, and we’re thrilled with the complex flavor profiles that were developed as a result. Our distillery-only releases are a way to thank our fans with something a bit different”
