GLANCE

Clear with a deep intensity. Dark cherry-wood hue

NOSE

Clean but there is an ethanol burn in the beginning (I found this after allowing the spirit to rest in the Glencairn for 10 mins). Pronounced intensity. Cinnamon swirl bun, forest floor, cherry cola, sweet oak, rosemary, lavender syrup and reminded me of butter rosemary cookies

PALATE

Pronounced flavor intensity, mouth-filling with medium sweetness. Oily mouthfeel. I got notes of sweet oak, cherry cola, and cashew butter. Notes of rosemary, lavender and earth tones surround the core flavors listed above on the palate.

FINISH

Long and somewhat complex. I got cherry cola, oak, spice and leather.

CLOSING REMARKS

The Jack Daniel’s Rye first came out as a limited edition in 2020. It was very difficult to find and the bottles quickly sold out. The LE Rye was very well regarded within the whiskey community and this drove the hype when Jack Daniel’s announced the Rye will now become a permanent part of their product line on an allocated basis. Like most of the barrel proof releases from Jack Daniel’s they clock in at very high proof points, which gets all us proof hounds super excited to dive in.

I usually don’t bother with adding water but felt like I needed to here. The rye and such high proof point creates for an extremely bold + hard punching whiskey. This SB BP Rye whiskey at times was difficult to enjoy because of the ethanol burn on the nose and I found the end of the palate + trail end of the finish drying – making it unpleasant. Water along with pulling the heat back also helped let more flavors stand out and differentiate which I really welcomed. For all rye fans this is a buy. If you are just getting into ryes, I wouldn’t start here. Cheers!
