GLANCE

Clear with a deep intensity and a dark golden hue

NOSE

The nose is an amazing bouquet of aromas. Clean with a pronounced intensity. Opens up to vanilla ice-cream with raisins, sweet oak shavings, nutmeg, toasted brown sugar, and fresh baked loaf of bread. Bright pear with cooked apple. The nose is on the brighter side. Fresh flowers with grape and there was a key-lime like note.

PALATE

Pronounced intensity, mouth-filling texture with medium to pronounced sweetness. Notes of cooked oats, with cinnamon and nutmeg. Found it to be a little drying at the end. Bright raisins with pear, apple and vanilla. Some stewed fruits enters (strawberry jam) – towards the end of the palate. There are notes of chocolate malt in the middle.

FINISH

Long with some complexity. Sweet oak, cinnamon, strawberry jam, leather and with light tobacco.

CLOSING REMARKS

Single barrel offerings are a gamble but sometimes they aren’t. I have tried a few SB offerings from Frey Ranch and I haven’t had one that I hated. Of course they ranged from good to great, this one falling in the latter. When I visited their distillery, I gained appreciation for the way they do things and their efforts clearly shows in their product. Their grains and the terroir impart unique flavors in the distillate and on top of that aging in the hot and generally dry climate – you have a recipe for an unique bourbon.

This single barrel offering was picked by Ashley Frey (co-founder of Frey Ranch) along with a group of influential women to celebrate women’s history month and celebrate all of the amazing contributions women have made to the whiskey industry at large. This is a cohesive bourbon experience which has great complexity and the bold flavors we have come to like from Frey Ranch. To be critical the mouthfeel isn’t completely balanced but it doesn’t make a significant impact on harming the experience. The nose and palate is a hint of floral, some spicy and lot of sweet. If you have never tried their SB offerings, you almost can’t go wrong. Cheers!
