GLANCE

Has high viscosity and slow forming thick legs

NOSE

I got strong notes off toffee, caramel, caramelized sugar, heavy oak, and rich vanilla. It has very well rounded nose with great notes to pick up from as it opens up.

Nosing after 4 Months

After the bottle had opened up really well, the nose was significantly smoother with the oakiness gone and replaced with milk chocolate, corn muffins and popcorn with caramel drizzled on it.

TASTE

Here I picked up a distinct coca-cola note in the middle of the palate. Overall there is this peanut butter/dustings, pound cake, oakiness followed with stone fruit, cinnamon, vanilla and caramel popcorn.

FINISH

Long finish with oakiness, and butter/caramel drizzled popcorn

CLOSING REMARKS

The Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof and few other special releases such as the Jack Daniels Single Barrel Proof Rye and Jack Daniels Single Barrel Heritage Barrel, it shows the brand is really trying to reinvent itself. Jack Daniels is synonymous with bottom shelf, mixing whiskeys, college bar staple whiskey and the infamous jack & coke. For what a long time, I saw Jack Daniels like something that is not for the connoisseur. As I wasn’t one before I started my journey in the world of whiskey and bourbon. The recent release of Jack Daniels 10 year aged product with Chris Fletcher as a young distiller leading the charge, many exciting things are in the future for Jack Daniels. Their barrel proof single barrel release, really highlights what they can produce in their truest form. For being in the $60 range and being barrel proof you get a good value for your money, and being a single barrel gives the added uniqueness. It also helps that it is generally more available than the other barrel proof offerings from competing distilleries. The downside in this case is that there seems to be a high degree of variance from barrel to barrel. This has lead to some people loving whats in their bottle and others hating it. Compared to other barrel proof offerings such as from Elijah Craig, Stagg Jr or Larceny, this falls short in my opinion. Mostly in the lack of mouthfeel and the flavors sometimes feels fleeting on the palate. Overall for retail this is definitely a try with great flavors and who knows, you might end up with a bottle even more delicious than mine!
