GLANCE

Clear with deep intense brown. Polished mahogany wood.

NOSE

Rich dark fruits and syrupy sweetness. Raisins soaked in rum, juicy figs, dates. There are notes of crushed almonds and dark chocolate.

PALATE

Medium sweetness overall, mouth-filling with pronounced flavor intensity. Sweet smoke, with rich dark fruits, strawberry, dark cherry, raisin with milk chocolate, some herbal notes (mint, thyme). The cask influence can overshine at times in the sense of tannins and bitterness surrounding the palate.

FINISH

Long with some complexity. Dry nuts, cherry, nutmeg spice with the thick syrupy sweetness lingering.

CLOSING REMARKS

Amrut put Indian whisky (along with Paul John) on the map since they started distilling their single malts back in 1980 and releasing product widely in the early 2000s. They have won many awards around the world, and Amrut along with Paul John have earned their place on the shelf of whiskey connoisseurs. This single cask K & L offering of Amrut is a home-run in my book. This is a dram that you reach for when the world outside looks bleak (maybe weather wise), and you need a little cheer. The thick flavors are lively and allow you to savor them for some time between sips. This allows you to really slow down and enjoy every drop. In the hot & humid climate of Bengaluru, whiskys age fast and really soak in all that barrel influence. The Indian barley add a unique flavor, coupled with the Oloroso cask adding a large depth to the malt and then you throw that tropical humid climate in the mix – you got a real winner. There are other single malts finished or aged in Oloroso barrels but I think this offering from Amrut perfectly marries spice, herbal notes with jammy fruits of all varieties. Only ding I would give is the bitterness around the palate that interjects itself, and interrupts the party of flavors. This might be from the long age (6 Years 6 Months) is quite long for an Indian Single malt, because of reasons mentioned above. Would be interesting to try a younger version of this same cask and see how it fairs. I wanted to make note on the aesthetics of the packaging. It is drop dead gorgeous and staying true to the Indian design. The embossed logos, and designs make the bottle look as beautiful as the spirit it holds. Hope you are able to grab another single barrel offering from Amrut, as this is a one off. Cheers!
